Quick Movie Review: Little Man

One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time, and this is coming from someone who kind of liked "White Chicks". This was such a nasty drag! Marlon Wayans is a tiny criminal who steals a diamond and hides it in some woman's purse. So in order to get it back he pretends to be a baby. Of course it doesn't go well, and he ends up playing a baby for days, making sure to provide many unfunny, nausea-inducing gags. I like goofy movies, and some raunchiness isn't a bad thing...usually. This is just awful, though. I should sacrificially murder this movie. Yes! Bonfire tonight, baby! My grade: D

Book Review: A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb

This is one of the last books I read recently. I had it on my shelf for awhile. I tend to not get overly excited about YA novels, but they're often quick, fluffy reads, which is what I needed to get me out of my reading rut. Reading rut=haven't finished a book in many a month. I get bored too easily. And distracted. Ever happen to you? This is a romantic ghost story. Helen is "light", a ghost of sorts who haunts people until they die, and then moves onto another host. If she doesn't, she might get dragged down to her own personal hell. We're not told what she did in her human existence to deserve this fate, even she doesn't know, but she believes she must have done something quite horrible to offend God. She's been haunting various humans for over a century, never seen or heard, although managing to have a small effect nonetheless. And then one day, while in a classroom with her host, a high school teacher, someone sees her. A student. Well, a gho

Movie Review: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

There are two types of movies I like to see in the theatre: comedy and action. And do you know, this has both? Yay! I couldn't resist seeing the latest Mission Impossible. Not only is it action-packed, it's also humorous. And Simon Pegg is in it, which is never a bad thing. I also like watching Tom Cruise in movies. Like I said before, he's not my favorite person/actor, but gosh he is entertaining. And he makes a good action star. The dude knows how to do stunts. I don't think I've actually seen all of the MI movies, but I know I saw at least one of them...just can't remember which one. Well, as far as I can tell, it doesn't matter if I'm up to date on the franchise. The movie was easy enough to follow, and I assume a few of the characters are new...or maybe I'm wrong. We begin with Cruise's character, Ethan, being broken out of a Russian prison, an elaborate and kinda violent ordeal. No one is entirely sure how he ended up in there, and he

Movie Review: Sherlock - Game of Shadows

I don't know about you, but I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan. I adore the Jeremy Brett series, and the newest series is another favorite. So it's always great when a new movie/TV adaptation comes out. I admit, though, this isn't my favorite Sherlock series. Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock isn't the definitive portrayal or characterization, but that doesn't matter. As with the first one, this sequel is a lot of fun. I'm actually surprised that it didn't get better reviews. I went into the movie theatre thinking I'd have lukewarm feelings about it, but when I came out, I was pleasantly surprised! There's fun action here, a compelling story, humor, some drama (but never too much), new characters, old characters, chemistry between the actors, and, of course, Moriarty. It begins shortly after the end of the last movie. Watson is still getting married, and may I say I very much like his choice of wife? Well, I do. And Sherlock is on Moriarty's back,

Quick Movie Review: Donnie Darko

I'm catching up on my Must See list at a crawling pace, but I am getting there! I picked up Donnie Darko a couple of weeks ago. I'd heard that I'd either love it or hate it. It's cult favorite, so that's normal. Turns out I quite liked it. Mind you, I didn't wholly understand it. It would require another watch or two (or more, knowing me) to completely comprehend it, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. I liked Jake Gyllenhaal in this. I'm not that familiar with his acting; I can't even recall what I've seen him in, which leads me to believe that this is the first movie I've seen him in. Well, it's a good start. He was rather great in this, and I really bought the whole mentally-ill-teenager-who-talks-to-a-demonic-rabbit scenario. I loved that his sister, Maggie, was in this as....his sister. I've liked her ever since I saw "Secretary". The rest of the cast is good as well. I wish the demonic rabbit had been in

Movie Review: Youth in Revolt

A mildly charming Michael Cera comedy. I like him in some movies, and not so much in others. He was decent in this, mostly because he has an alter ego, Francois, who should have been in it more. Basic plot: Nick Twisp falls in love with some girl while his family (his mom and his mom's latest boyfriend) are staying in some trailer thingy located...somewhere. She has a boyfriend, of course, and Nick desperately wants to win her over + lose his virginity. He creates a fake alter ego, a French sociopath named Francois, to help him, and they do some crazy stuff along the way. There is a good cast here, although I didn't care for the girl who played Nick's love interest, although that has more to do with the character than the actress. She was bland and self-involved, a typical romantic interest in a "coming of age" film. That's how she was supposed to be played, sure, and since Nick is simply a horny teenager, I get the feeling he would have "fallen in l

Short Movie Review: Green Lantern

Blah. That's all I really want to say about this boring, weak, maggot-infested movie. I'll try to say more, though. Well, aside from having almost nothing interesting to say, "Green Lantern" suffers from lack of originality, a weak storyline, a weak hero (he isn't anything special), a stupid villain, a predictable romance, and...how should I phrase it...it doesn't have IT. No bite. There was nothing in this that could easily hold my interest for almost two hours. It did get a fraction better once some action started happening, but it wasn't enough to save it. And Ryan Reynolds is alright. He's not a favorite actor of mine, but he didn't bring the movie down. No one could have elevated it. NO ONE. It would need a whole new script/storyline.  You know what, I'm bored just writing this review and having to think about this movie, that's how much I didn't like it. My grade: D

Movie Review: The Runaways

This was one of the last movies I picked up at the library. I decided to watch it for two reasons: I had never seen it; I wanted to see Dakota Fanning in a movie. I feel that I must have seen her in a movie at some point, but if I did, I completely forget. You probably already know that this is about The Runaways, who were somewhat popular back in the seventies before they fizzled out. I think I may have heard "Cherry Bomb" once upon a time. But maybe not. Other than that, I'm not familiar with the band, and I'm not really a Joan Jett fan, although, like most people, I'm familiar with her. Unfortunately, this movie just wasn't that good. It's too bad it wasn't better directed, better written, and more factual. They left some major things out. But I'm neither a Runaways fan or a Joan Jett fan, so I can't say I was disappointed. Just a tad bored. And I laughed sometimes, even though that may not have been the film maker's intended reacti

Quick Movie Review: Did You Hear About the Morgans?

It's bad comedy week, apparently. I didn't like this. What surprised me the most was the total lack of chemistry between Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. I honestly believed they would make a good duo. I was so wrong! Well, they play an estranged married couple. Hugh's character (I seriously forgot his name, sorry), cheated on Meryl (but I remember hers...odd), and she left him. He's been unsuccessfully trying to win her back for months, and on one such night after they've had dinner together, they witness a murder and are forced into the witness protection program. What follows is your typical city-folk-trapped-in-Hicksville scenario. Very unoriginal and unfunny. And SJP is annoying. Plus Hugh is his usual fuddy duddy self. I like him a lot in other movies, but he isn't a broad actor. He's, well, himself. And how am I supposed to like this movie when I can't even root for the couple (who are obviously going to patch things up by the end)? Long

Movie Review: The Break Up

You know, watching movies like this and "Just Go With It" make me realize how underrated Jennifer Aniston is as an actress. Once again, she is the best thing about this movie, and she's not a bad actress at all. It's too bad she doesn't pick better movies (or get offered better movies). "The Break Up" isn't that funny, although it has its moments, especially when Brooke's brother is onscreen, an acapella martial artist who "isn't" secretly gay (hehe). But overall it didn't pull many laughs, and it was slightly depressing in parts, but intentionally so. I guess it's a problem when you don't want the two main characters to get back together. This is assuming the audience is meant to root for them, and why wouldn't we be meant to root for them? As it is, Vince Vaughn's character is a jerk who doesn't deserve the caring girlfriend who dumped him, who cries over him and wants to get back together (unbeknownst

Movie Review: Cube

This is an interesting creeper from 1997. A group of strangers wake up and find themselves trapped in a "cube". Oh, but they can leave any cube that they're in. It's just that going into any given cube may lead to their horrible, gory deaths. That is a nice twist, isn't it? Amazingly, a few people manage to find each other without getting killed first, and they decide to stick together to try and survive the various cubes that they must travel through in order to find a way out (assuming there is one...). They figure out that each one of them has some useful quality. Quentin is a cop with determination and guts, and he's pretty much the group's caffeine. Leaven is a pro at math (so I automatically hate her!). Worth, is...something that I won't give away. There's also a doctor. Everyone is important. Of course they can't all live. So don't get too attached to anyone. I have a few problems with this, as I always do. For one, the acting isn&

Very Short Movie Review: Be Kind Rewind

This looked funnier in the preview, if I'm not mistaken. It wasn't as good as I was hoping, but it has a solid cast and likable characters. At times it manages to be funny, but it's not a laugh-out-loud film, which was disappointing. It has a good premise, and the execution could have been more effective, but all-in-all it wasn't bad. Not a repeat watch, though. Wow, that was very short, yes? My grade: B-

Short Movie Review: Beaches

It took me awhile to get to this, and I wasn't thrilled about watching it since I knew it was a sappy tear-jerker. But I made myself. I'll give a quick rundown. I think I overtaxed myself on "Driving Lessons". This isn't bad like I thought it would be, although it still isn't my cup of coca cola. I like Bette Midler, and she plays a narcissistic diva well. However, I don't like Barbara Hershey. In fact, I never have. I don't think she's a good actress. She might be barely passable at times, but so far that's the best I can say about her acting (you may have noticed her terrible acting in "Insidious"). Her character isn't that great, either, but she isn't meant to be, so this qualifies as one of Hershey's "barely passable" acting jobs. She's not really good, but her character sucks, so it's not that depressing. I would have appreciated seeing this role filled by a better actress, though. My favorite se

Movie Review: Driving Lessons

*Many a Spoiler Ahead* Yet another failure in the "quirky" British comedy vault. There are usually more winners than losers, but this was just foot fungus. I was interested in seeing this mainly because I wanted to see how Rupert Grint fared in something other than Harry Potter. It wasn't worth it, but at least now I can say I've seen him in something else, even if that something else was terrible. Rupert plays Ben, the 17 year-old son of a preacher and preachy mother (Laura Linney). For some reason, an older man moves into their house (he accidentally ran his wife over, and they're helping him cope...I think) and Ben's cold, religious mama decided that Ben should get a job so he can help support this man that has moved into their house. It's being a charitable Christian, I believe. It's total bulls**t, but oh well, he does it anyway. He goes to work for an older woman, Evie (Julie Walters, also in Harry Potter as Molly Weasley), a Dame with thre

Movie Review: Forest of Death

The title alone should clue you as to the quality of this film. To put it bluntly: it's not scary and it's dumb. That's basically it. I also didn't care for any of the characters, and they didn't give me any reasons to like them. The guy who believes that plants talk to each other (which they do, btw) has a career-obsessed/self-obsessed TV reporter girlfriend who uses her boyfriend to get headlines. I know what you're thinking: how can having a botanist boyfriend help a reporter get juicy stories? Well, let me tell you. You see, there's this forest, and in this forest many people go to commit suicide. It's famous for it. Because if you're going to kill yourself, why not a heavily wooded area, right? And in this nice patch of suicide land, some people (most who were going to kill themselves) reported seeing ghosts, and fog. Fog. I'm scared! So girlfriend likes to propel the idea that there are ghosts around. But the real reason girlfriend u

Movie Review: X-Men: First Class

One of the things I hate about watching hyped-up, highly-praised movies is that I'm fairly certain it will not be as good as everyone is saying, and then I'll have to put my two cents in about how not fantastic it is. Alright, so I actually enjoy that part. I'm not a huge X-Men fan. I've seen all of the movies, I watched the animated show when I was a kid (and liked it), but I wasn't excited to see this, despite the good things I've heard. I was expecting to like it, but not love it, and that's what happened. For starters, I liked it best before Erik and Charles met. I liked badass Erik (Michale Fassbender) going after his overdue revenge by himself with no one to tell him what to do. I also liked Erik a ton more than Charles (James McAvoy). Charles is a dick. At first. He seduces young co-eds and drinks while arrogantly prancing around and being smarter than everyone else, which isn't that hard to do when you can read everyones' minds. That'

TV Review: Case Histories

We're totally gonna have sex. Can you tell? *Some Spoilers ahead* Oh joy, we have a new mystery series on the loose. This one is set in Scotland. Jason Isaacs stars (Lucius Malfoy, if you recall) as a detective with his own private investigative agency that isn't doing too well. He has a young, intelligent and aware daughter whom he takes with him on his cases like the responsible dad that he is. His ex-wife doesn't like it (I suppose this is meant to make her look like a biotch, but I don't blame her one bit. Dude needs to not expose his kid to psychos and grizzly details of dead girls). He used to be a cop, but was "disgraced" as they tend to be in these stories. But, like a leprechaun slipping on a rainbow puddle and dropping his pot of gold into some lucky bastard's open hands, Jackson Brodie is all at once awash with cases. Real cases. First there is the case of a little girl who went missing in 1981. Then a man insists that Brodi

Quick Movie Review: They Might Be Giants

Another Sherlock Holmes flick, only without a real Sherlock Holmes. Instead, we have a former judge who believes he is Sherlock Holmes. And he's good at it. His brother is determined to get him committed, which is where Dr. Watson comes in. It's pure luck that her last name is Watson, otherwise Sherlock wouldn't have wanted her help. Yes, Watson is a she. Sherlock believes that Moriarty is after him, and he's been frantically searching for the clues to determine when and where they will meet, since his enemy is leaving him clues, naturally. It actually does appear that he is correct, or at least close. And there really are people after him. Not only his brother, but a mean dude who is out to kill him. This isn't so much about mystery as it is the dream of being larger than life. Justin wants to be (and effectively is) Sherlock Holmes, another man wants to be the Scarlett Pimpernel (I can't blame him, that dude is cool). No one is entirely satisfied with wha

Movie Review: The Seven-Per-Cent Solution

This is a perhaps not well-known Sherlock Holmes movie. My brother bought it used on VHS, since it's so expensive to buy new or on DVD. When it's rare, people will up the price to a ridiculous amount [insert angry face here]. This is more about Sherlock's deadly drug addiction than anything else. His brother Mycroft (one of my favorite characters) and Watson conspire to get him help by luring him to Venice, where Sigmund Freud is. Yes, Freud is in fact a main character. I love that! He's played by Alan Arkin. While the drug issue is the main plot, there is a mystery to be solved. It's a Sherlock movie, so there has to be. It is drug-related, however, but I won't give it away. The main issue here is the casting. Robert Duvall is miscast as Dr. Watson, and although I think the man playing Sherlock, Nicol Williamson, is a good actor, he isn't Sherlock. He's still likable, however, so I can't complain about him too much. Vanessa Redgrave and Lauren

Inspector Lewis: Wild Justice

You know, I was excited last night. Why? Because, after weeks of no Inspector Lewis, they were finally airing two new episodes back to back! Yay! PBS has been a bit backed up, what with all of their pledge programming and favorites. There are four new episodes in total, and two, I believe, were supposed to air in September. Only one did. Naturally, I was looking forward to the 9-midnight Lewis-athon. And you know what ticked me off? They didn't play two new episodes back to back. They repeated the first one and then played a new one. So I had to wait until 10:30 to get my fix. Because of course everyone wants to re-watch the first one, right? Wrong! Mamma not happy! But we did get one new episode, so I'll be content with that. They should be playing the other two next week, since a new series is supposed to start soon. This one is called "Wild Justice". Lewis and Hathaway are investigating the death of a female Bishop. She flew across the pond from the USA for

My Week With Marilyn and Snow White

By now, you've probably seen the trailer for "My Week With Marilyn". Or, uh, maybe you haven't. I've heard about it, of course, and saw the Vogue cover with Michelle Williams done up like Marilyn. Am I the only one who wasn't impressed? Nothing against Michelle, but she in no way reminds me of Marilyn. I made the mistake of voicing my opinion on another site, and one outraged person replied, "Are you blind!" and went on to point out that they have similar features, blah, blah, blah. Well, yeah, their noses and mouths are alike, I won't deny it, but it's not simply about having a Marilyn Monroe pout. You need to not only look at her, which, I'm sorry, but Michelle doesn't, IMO, but you need to have the Monroe feel. Know what I mean? And when I look at Michelle Williams, all I see is Michelle Williams posing as Marilyn Monroe. But, I was willing to give her a chance. Maybe her performance would change my mind (not that I'm likely

More Short Reviews: Getting to the Point

I've gotten behind on my reviews recently, and I've seen a few films this past week, so I'll just give a quick opinion about them. I'm lazy, I know. A couple I saw years ago and re-watched, the others were new to me. Mrs. Doubtfire : To be frank, this isn't that great. Robin Williams is good, the kids are cute, and Pierce Brosnan is hunky, but it doesn't turn out as many laughs as it should. I do give it credit for not giving a completely cliche ending, although the ending could have been more conclusive on one front. My grade: C+ White Chicks : This one is so stupid...but funny. It's one of those idiotic comedies that works. It's not brilliant by any means, but I like it. My grade: B Alice in Wonderland : I've never been a big fan of this story. It just doesn't click with me. And I wasn't expecting to like this, but it was okay. I like Johnny Depp, and I was pleasantly surprised by Mia Wasikowska. I have to see her in more to know if

Quick Movie Review: Dark Water

OMG, this is so scary! Or not. It does have its creepy moments, but it isn't all that scary. I still say, watch "Insidious" if you want that. Or "Halloween". In case you didn't know, this is about a woman, recently separated from her a-hole husband, who goes to live in a crappy apartment with her young daughter and starts getting haunted by...water. There are three things that I genuinely like about this movie: Jennifer Connelly, the little cutie pie who plays her daughter, and the ending, and I mean that in a good way. It's not an ending everyone will like, but it worked for me. While it isn't big on terror (unless you like being terrorized by water...dark water), it is atmospheric. It's almost always raining, the sky is rarely clear of clouds and fog, and the apartment building they live in is grimy and falling apart. It's a real downer. The whole movie. And there were some instances that were supposed to be scary but just came o

Movie Review: Dirty Pretty Things

An at times disturbing, touching, and clever film about immigrants in England. More to the point, it's about how immigrants (both legal and illegal) are taken advantage of and abused. Kick 'em while they're down, you know? Senay and Okwe both work at a fancy hotel, two of many out-of-country workers. I'm assuming they like to hire immigrants not only because they can pay them less, but so they can blackmail them into doing what they want, otherwise they face deportation or prison, or both. Okwe is there illegally, therefore he doesn't have a passport and if he gets caught, well...Senay, a girl from Turkey, is there legally, although I was never completely sure what her circumstances were. She has a little apartment behind a store, and she lets Okwe sleep on her couch since he has nowhere else to go. She isn't allowed to have a job, which she does because she needs money, and she isn't allowed to harbor an illegal immigrant, which she is. She could go to pr

Quick Movie Review: Inception

Finally, I saw the much raved "Inception". By now everyone has seen it, and after getting a few, "You haven't seen Inception? What's wrong with you?", mamma mia came across it at the library, and we both sat down and watched it. I won't bother with what it's about, since (a) you've probably already seen it, and (b) I have no idea what it is about. Okay, I kind of do, but I'm too lazy to type it out. First of all, good casting. My favorite out of everyone is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and I hope I can see him in the upcoming "50/50". So no complaints about any of the actors. I did get annoyed with Leo's character at times. I know he went through a traumatic experience and all, but I wanted him to just push his issues aside for five minutes and get the job done without making his problem everyone else's problem. And, as expected, the story could at times be confusing, as intended by the filmmakers, but I managed to underst

TV Review: Rising Damp

I should have gotten this one out a few weeks ago, since it's been that long since I finished it. This is a Britcom classic that I hadn't heard about until my mom picked it up in the library, all four seasons and a movie. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Everything is hit and miss, and this one turned out to be a hit. It's about a cranky, racist, bigoted landlord (Leonard Rossiter) and his various tenants, an African man who is the son of a chief, Phillip (Don Warrington), his roomie, Alan (Richard Beckinsale), and a supposedly ladylike woman whom the landlord has his pervy eye on, Miss Jones (Frances de la Tour). And his cat. Every season is good, although the first two were better because Alan was in both. Sadly, the actor who played Alan, Richard Beckinsale (Kate Beckinsale's dad), died in 1979 from a heart attack at age thirty-one. It was a bit sad after that, but still funny. The movie, however, is a total disappointment. I was surprised at that. It w

Movie Review: Contagion

Germaphobes beware! I like disaster movies. They tend to be tense and keep your eyes glued to the screen. "Contagion" sounded promising, and it looked promising based on the trailer. I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed by the end, however. It was a bit of an anticlimax for me. Great cast, though. This movie is riddled with famailiar actors: Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Brian Cranston, Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle. Jennifer Ehle, Matt Damon, and Kate Winslet were my three personal favorites. We start off with Gwyneth Paltrow coughing at the airport. Then she dies. Now, if you don't like Gwyneth Paltrow, you might enjoy this part. You also might enjoy when they saw her brain open. I'm just saying. Personally, I like her. Not a big fan, but not a...non-fan either. If that makes sense. Although I can see why she gets on people's bad sides. Buddha knows there are actors who I can't stand! Matt Da

Movie Review: Big Momma's House 2

You know, before I rewatched the first two, I thought the quality would decrease down the line. The third one is without a doubt the worst, and I thought this one would be in the middle. It is, I guess, but it's actually just about as good as the original. It's funny and silly and entertaining. Good cast, too. Aside from Martin Lawrence, we have Kat Dennings and Emily Procter, and I'm fairly sure that Chloe Moretz is the cute little girl. Basic plot: Malcolm and his wife, Sherry, are having a baby. He's now doing desk work instead of field work, but he misses it, so he (against everyone's permission) dresses up as Big Momma to infiltrate a family. He bonds with the kiddies along the way and tries to fix the parental problems, as they always do, while hiding his real identity and trying to catch the bad guys. My grade: B

Movie Review: The Chronicles of Narnia -The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Hello God, it's me, Lucy I don't know about you, but I grew up watching a little series of movies called "The Chronicles of Narnia". Not this big, expensive franchise, but the other one. Plus, the animated version of "The Lion, The Witch, and The Warddrobe". After all these years, I still prefer those versions with their cheap special effects and buck-toothed heroine. They possess something that this one lacks" charm. Having said that, these aren't bad adaptations. Okay, this one kind of sucks, but as a whole they aren't bad, and the first two were pretty good. I wasn't impressed with "Dawn Treader". First of all, it's fairly boring. I also felt that there is a lack of focus on the plot, and it could be confusing at times. I admit, though, that despite having seen the original several times, I forgot parts of the story. My mom reminded me of a few things, thankfully, otherwise I would have been confused. To be fair, thi

Quick Movie Review: Big Momma's House

Since I reviewed the third installment in this drag series, I thought I'd go back and rewatch the first one. Seeing that monstrosity that is 'Like Father Like Son' made me desperate to watch the original, superior one. It was just...so dreadful. This one isn't perfect. I personally wished that Terrence Howard had been featured more. You know, more bad guy action and suspense, less Martin Lawrence wooing Nia Long. It's pretty funny, for the most part, and it has a decent cast. My grade: B

Movie Review: Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

I've never had much interest in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". It seems as if everyone has read the books (I haven't), seen the movies (hey, I've seen one now), and are anticipating the American adaptation this winter (I'm not). But it hasn't really hit my curiosity nerve. Still, my mom is a fan of the books, and she's been wanting to watch the movies for awhile now, and I finally got my hands on this at the library. I had to mug someone to get it, because, you know, it's quite popular. I made my mom watch it by herself, though. I wasn't certain that I was going to watch it at all, since, like I said, I don't care about this series a whole lot. But I figured I should, otherwise I'd never watch it, and I felt that I had to. It is supposed to be great, after all. Luckily, I did watch it by myself. I stayed up until 2 am watching it. I'm glad I watched it alone, too, because it is not comfortable watching rape/sex/abuse scenes

Movie Review: Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son

Nowhere near as good as the original Big Momma's House. Now even as mediocre as the first sequel. This one is just bad. First of all, it needed more action. There is a small plot in this movie -Trent witnesses a murder and Malcolm makes him dress up as a girl and goes to live in an all-girl's school, blah, blah- and there are a few bad guys who never manage to be intimidating. But they should have used the 35-year-old American Draco Malfoy more. At least he would have been something mildly entertaining. I want to say this movie was funny, but it didn't provide many laughs. Ignoring the plot more often than not, we are instead treated (more like tortured) to various music/dance sequences and a bland romance between Trent and a nice but unimpressive girl named Hayley. Rather than being riddled with bullets and action scenes it's riddled with cliches and stupidity. Most of the scenes were perfectly disposable, seeing as they were pointless and did nothing to further th

TV Review: Inspector Lewis - Old, Unhappy, Far Off Things

When I heard that we had four new episodes of Inspector Lewis coming, I was like yaaaaaaaaay! This is one of my favorite mysteries, and I didn't think we were going to get any this year. In the first episode of the new season, a woman is killed at a women's college, bringing Lewis back to a place he had been ten years prior when a fifteen year old girl was attacked. He thinks the crimes might be related, and that suspicion is only furthered when someone else is killed. I don't want to spoil anything that happens, so I won't say much more. My only real gripe is that the ending was silly, not to mention reminiscent of a past episode. That part didn't do anything for me. My grade: B

This Is Not A Book Review: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Like I said, this isn't a book review, because I got to page 193 and then said, "Eff you, A Discovery of Witches!" and put it down somewhere where it wouldn't taunt me with its ripe blandness. I don't think it's entirely fair to grade a book that I didn't even manage to get half way through, so I won't. I was so amazingly not gripped by what should have been a gripping book, that it kept falling out of my non-gripping hands. And it's a fat book (almost 600 pages of insomnia-curing blandness). It was just so dull! This has vampires, witches, and demons in it. Why does it suck? I mean almost every chapter is the same, repetitive hunk of paragraphs. The heroine goes to the library, she gets stared at by various creatures, she jogs, she rows, she does yoga with her vampire boyfriend, she drinks tea, she eats lunch, and...yeah, up to the point in which I officially shunned this book, NOTHING HAPPENED. I'm serious. You'd think with a bunch of

Quick Movie Review: 30 Minutes or Less

My only real problem with this movie is that it is too crude. I know crudeness is mistaken for comedy a lot these days, but when are they going to learn that it often isn't comedy? And when it is, it's only because it's done right. In this case, it's hit and miss. Okay, now that I've got that out of the way, we can move on. I liked "30 Minutes or Less". I liked the whole cast, I laughed a bit, and I have a sweet spot for Danny McBride and Jesse Eisenberg. Danny McBride does this sort of role so well. So maybe he is typecast, and yes, his range isn't exactly far, but I love the one or two types of roles I've seen him do. If he was a dramatic actor doing serious roles, I might have a problem, but he's Danny McBride, so... Despite being overly crude, it is actually a pretty funny movie. It probably could have been funnier, and it's not perfect, but it passes the test. I liked the ending, too. My grade: B

Quick Movie Review: Vampires Suck

Funnier than I thought it would be. Not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny all the time, but not a dud. I liked the actors, and the actress playing Becca nailed Kristen Stewart's mannerisms. And the guy playing Edward is kind of hot. That never hurts. He also looks like Cam Gigandet. I wish spoofs nowadays would take a cue from classics like Naked Gun (all three of them!) and Airplane! Now those are funny. This one could benefit from a better script and smoother scene transitions. Oh, and the guy who played Oswald in The Drew Carey Show plays Becca's dad, Frank. Hehe. My grade: B-

Movie Review: The Maid

Another foreign film that I picked up. Very tense! Raquel has been the maid for a family for 23 years. It's a good family, and Raquel is practically a part of the family. They treat her well. Her life outside of them is non-existent, as far as I can tell. But now the work is getting to be a bit too much, so the mistress decides to hire another maid to help her. Raquel hates that! So what does she do? She runs the new girl out of the house. It doesn't matter that she is nice or does her job. Raquel is a bit insane, irrational, and hard to sympathize with at times. She has some emotional issues, I think. You know where she's coming from, to a point, but that doesn't make what she's doing right. She also seems to have an issue with the eldest child, Camilla, for no reason at all. Camilla tells her mother to open her eyes and see that Raquel hates her, even though she almost raised her. It's never explained why Raquel doesn't like Camilla, as she's a nice gi
