John Wick: Chapter 2

*Spoilers everywhere*

Before we go any further, I just have to say: the dog does not die! I wanted to put that out there in case anyone was avoiding this film in fear of puppycide. I can't even watch the first movie without fast-forwarding through that part, just like I made my mom do when watching The Lion King when I was a child. I don't need to see that shit.

John Wick: Chapter 2 is the first John Wick, only with less incentive. Seriously, if someone killed my boo-boo, I would bring the roof down on them, their family, and upload all their naked pictures onto the internet. Do not test me! In Chapter 2, however, his motivation stems from a mark. More specifically, a mark from Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamario), who is, I have to say, a rather mesmerizing villain. He orders Wick to murder his beloved sister during her coronation in Rome. The repercussions are immediate. Just as I would bring the roof down on anyone who hurt my puppy, the roof is brought down on Wick, and then he brings the roof down on his enemies. Basically, no one has a roof. It's very sad.

As far as sequels go, this is a worthy addition. While it lacks the kick to the balls that the first film brought, it still brings the action, and if you adore Keanu Reeves (and puppies), I can pretty much guarantee that you'll enjoy this.

My only issue? As I mentioned, it didn't have as much motivation as its predecessor. You would think that any and everyone would have learned their lesson in la primera pelicula, but no, no they didn't. Despite being described as "the devil", John Wick still has adversaries who are cocky enough to bet against him. I always thought that was an interesting nickname. John Wick, while quite deadly, is also a sweetheart. Am I the only one who thinks that? It could also be Keanu Reeves' performance that gives away that impression. Then again, let's not pretend that Reeves is the world's greatest actor. Don't get me wrong, I love my Keanu. Bill and Ted forever! But he's not the most gifted actor. Despite that, I would watch him in anything, and that is a gift that few actors are bestowed, including most Oscar winners. Except Meryl Streep, who can choose which of my children live any day.

Ruby Rose plays one of Wick's more persistent opponents. I enjoyed the fact that she was deaf, mostly because there isn't enough voice (pun intended) given to deaf people in film. She's an evil badass, and while she's hard to like, I'm glad she's there. You know, so John can kill her. I like it when he kills people.

Another co-star is Common, whose name I never fail to forget, but whom I always say, Wait...I know him. He's a rapper and his name starts with 'C'. WHO IS HE?! And I never guess. Never. You need to change your name, Common. Seriously. It's too...generic.

All in all, John Wick: Chapter 2 is a fun, action-packed sequel that everyone needs to watch. Not because the action sequences are brilliant (okay, maybe they are), and not because Keanu Reeves is fun to watch (he totally is), but because puppies are adorable and we all need them in our lives. There aren't enough puppy wuppy scenes to satisfy this animal lover, but I'll take as many puppy scenes as I can get.

My grade: B+

Movie Review: Serial Mom

*may be spoilers* I feel as if I should have seen this before, but it somehow managed to escape my notice. But hey, I found it! Great premise, too: Kathleen Turner as a picture-perfect wife and mother, living in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. She's also insane and likes to kill people over the smallest matters. She has a talent for murder, but not, sadly, for covering her tracks. The thought of wearing gloves or wiping fingerprints doesn't even cross her mind. The first half of this is the strongest. After she gets arrested, it loses some of its humor and charm, though it doesn't completely fall flat. Good ending, as well. Ricki Lake plays her daughter, Misty. It's easy to forget about her acting days, especially when you haven't seen her in anything...like me. I liked her in this, and may I say that it was refreshing to have a chubby young actress instead of a typical, thin, dime-a-dozen actress? Overall, not a bad comedy, but not a masterpiece.

Inspector Lewis: Wild Justice

You know, I was excited last night. Why? Because, after weeks of no Inspector Lewis, they were finally airing two new episodes back to back! Yay! PBS has been a bit backed up, what with all of their pledge programming and favorites. There are four new episodes in total, and two, I believe, were supposed to air in September. Only one did. Naturally, I was looking forward to the 9-midnight Lewis-athon. And you know what ticked me off? They didn't play two new episodes back to back. They repeated the first one and then played a new one. So I had to wait until 10:30 to get my fix. Because of course everyone wants to re-watch the first one, right? Wrong! Mamma not happy! But we did get one new episode, so I'll be content with that. They should be playing the other two next week, since a new series is supposed to start soon. This one is called "Wild Justice". Lewis and Hathaway are investigating the death of a female Bishop. She flew across the pond from the USA for
